"Romeo e Giulietta" intreccia numerosi elementi nella vicenda dei due innamorati "nati sotto contraria stella". Dalla "morte viva" al drammatico scontro tra due generazioni - la lotta tra le ragioni dell'odio e le ragioni dell'amore - il dramma si arricchisce di temi la cui complessità va oltre la vicenda d'amore. Tuttavia è questa a fare di "Romeo e Giulietta" l'opera forse più celebre e più amata di Shakespeare e nel contrasto tra la purezza, l'appassionata consapevolezza dell'amore e l'inesorabile concatenarsi delle circostanze funeste va cercata la grandezza del dramma, la chiave della sua autentica dimensione tragica annunciata nel Prologo grazie alla contrapposizione dei due termini amore e contraria stella.

The play begins with a large fight between the Capulets and the Montagues, two prestigious families in Verona, Italy. These families have been fighting for quite some time, and the Prince declares that their next public brawl will be punished by death. When the fight is over, Romeo’s cousin Benvolio tries to cheer him of his melancholy. Romeo reveals that he is in love with a woman named Rosaline, but she has chosen to live a life of chastity. Romeo and Benvolio are accidentally invited to their enemy’s party; Benvolio convinces Romeo to go.


At the party, Romeo locks eyes with a young woman named Juliet. They instantly fall in love, but they do not realize that their families are mortal enemies. When they realize each other’s identities, they are devastated, but they cannot help the way that they feel...

Per chi non conosce le sue opere William Shakespeare potrebbe sembrare un autore da evitare come la peste. Tuttavia, se come me siete costretti a leggerlo per scuola o se semplicemente siete lettori curiosi, scoprirete che non è fatto così, perché persino in una tragedia come questa è capace di inserire qualche battuta. E, in fondo, si potrebbe dire che é una breve storia d'amore con un pizzico di avventura. Vedrete che dopo aver iniziato questa opera le pagine scorreranmo placide sotto i vostri occhi e arriverete alla fine in un attimo. Passando ai personaggi, Romeo mi ha deluso moltissimo perché si è rivelato fin da subito un debole sottomesso esageratamente ai suoi sentimenti. Non credo di fare uno spoiler a nessuno dicendo che si uccide, ma quello che forse potrà sorprendere qualcuno è che trovo questo suo gesto davvero stupido. Giulietta perlomeno in precedenza si è ribellata al volere del padre accettando perfino di correre un grande rischio bevendo il sonnifero. Certo, anche lei è da biasimare per essersi uccisa dopo aver visto il suo sposo a terra senza vita, ma almeno prima la sua bella figura l'ha fatta!

Who hasn't read his works yet may think that Shakspeare is a boring author to avoid. However, if you have to read them like me as summer homework or you're just inquisitive readers, you'll find out that it's not like this, because even in a tragedy there's a joke and, after all, you can say that "Romeo and Juliet" is a love story with a bit of adventure.
After starting reading it and knowing the characters, you'll arrive at the end of the book in a short time.
Talking about the characters, Romeo disappointed me a lot, as since the beginnig he has been a weak submissive to his feelings.
I think I won't spoil the story saying that he kills himself, but what may surprise someone is that I found his gesture really fool. At least Juliet rebel against his father's will, even accepting to run the risk of dying due to the sleeping draught.
Of course you have to blame her too for his suicide, but she cut a nice figure before!
